Welcome to 5th Grade Reading!
In our Argument, Opinion, and Persuasive Reading unit, we will be reading a texts on a variety of topics where the authors are trying to make an argument or to present sides of an argument.
Students will learn and be asked to discuss what the claims are, explain how the author supports those claims with reasons and evidence, discuss the biases that authors bring to the writing and how those biases influence the evidence that is presented, summarize a text by including the main ideas and supporting evidence, synthesize information learned about the topic across multiple texts, write about their reading as a way to help them grow their thinking, and engage in group conversations about their learning.
Students are asked to consider the following questions when they read: Should chocolate milk be in school? Are extreme sports worth the risks? Should plastic bottled water bottles be banned? Should people boycott or support zoos? Should cell phones be allowed in school?
The reading unit is closely tied to the current unit in writing as students will be using their reading articles to help them plan and draft their argument essays in writing class.
